These eggs are not always fertilised; unfertilised golden eggs are laid periodically and are inert, while fertilised eggs hatch into Golden Goslings that develop into full Golden Geese. A notable and remarkable trait of the male Golden Goose is his ability to pass on the golden egg-laying trait to common geese through mating. Should a male Golden Goose mate with an ordinary female goose, the ordinary goose will thereafter begin laying golden eggs herself, though her offspring will not be true Golden Geese. This trait does not transfer further — the next generation from such a pairing will revert to normal unless bred with a true Golden Goose again.

Golden Geese are highly intelligent creatures, capable of complex thought and full verbal communication in human language. They are articulate, perceptive, and often opinionated — they are not pets, and they do not behave as such. They form strong social bonds within the flock and display clear hierarchies, with older, more experienced individuals commanding respect from younger ones.
